Tim and I have been having a massive clear out in our house this week because it just didn't feel right...
Part of the reason for this may be that our darling hamster, Brian, had passed away. He was curled up in his fluffy bed where Tim found him this morning. He'd been spending an awful lot of time in bed lately as he really was quite old for a hamster...
Gone were the days when he would scurry around fast as lightning and jump of the highest ledge: the very first day we got him he leapt out of Tim's hands as he took him from the breeder! He was a real adventure seeker, often scurrying around on the bed whilst I read and waited for Tim to come home from a late shift... I'd turn the page as I heard a tiny *thump* and he'd had jumped off the edge, crazy thing. Nothing kept his attention for long and we "lost" him several times as he made a leap for it and scurried behind the shoe rack or under the sofa before we could catch him...
We've had him since May 2008, just a few short weeks after Tim and I moved in together, so it seems strange to think he is no longer here even though we had known this day was coming for a while now. His "old age" crept in around Christmas time when he was no longer interested in rolling around the house in his ball... if you've ever seen the film BOLT and know the hamster Rhino from the film then you'll have a good idea of what Brian was like once he was given the "freedom" to run around the house at will! He still continued to enjoy running around on the sofa between us and trying to make a break for it under the cushions, but he soon tired and would curl up next to one of us and sleep... that was when we knew his days were numbered...
Even though we knew this day was coming it was still terribly sad to say goodbye. We wrapped him in a blue cloth with a piece of amethyst and one of his toys and then buried him in the back garden, telling him how much we loved him. Now I know some people don't go in for the whole "life-after-death", especially for animals, but I personally believe he is happily running around like he used to, enjoying the "afterlife" and making friends with all the family pets that have gone before him and amusing my deceased family members as much as he used to amuse us. So, although today is sad, it is not without some joy, because I'm sure he'll be having the time of his life now he's free of all those "old age aches and pains"...
Goodbye Brian... we will miss you and the millions of blurry photos we had to make in an attempt to get a decent picture as you whizzed by xx

Bless you Brian, you look as though you were adorable with lovely long fur. A real character. Rest in peace little one. Safe in your new life.

Sorry to hear about Brian. Maybe when you are ready you could consider having another hamster. They make such lovely pets, and are good company. I remember crying buckets when my hamster died when I was a kid. By the looks, Brian was certainly a lovely cuddly bundle of fun. x

Amanda,
I'm sorry to hear about Brian. He is the cutest hamster I've ever seen. I'm sure he's enjoying some sort of afterlife... and that he's amusing people like you said.
