This review has no financial incentive and is totally honest based upon our own experiences.
Today I'd like to introduce you to a fantastic company I was lucky enough to get to know recently.

Carddies is run by sisters, Raquel and Esther, who hand draw these wonderful little card people and scenes that kids (and grown ups) can have fun colouring in and then playing with.
The idea came to Raquel during a rainy seaside holiday when she needed to find a way to occupy her own family. Since then her sister Esther and her kids joined in the fun and Carddies have grown into a brand that has, quite rightly, won several awards.

Each of the current Carddies sets comes packed in a handy box, easy to carry around wherever you go. Inside the box you'll find a scene, a set of figures to colour in, and crayons in every colour you'll need. It is quite simply a box full of fun!
I asked Raquel to share a little bit more about herself and the team, and here's what she said:

Raquel, this all started when your three little girls needed entertaining. I'm sure many mums can understand the need to provide amusement for their children, but when did you first realise that what you were doing for your three might be just the thing other mums were looking for?
"It took quite a while. I realised I was onto something when my daughters’ friends started asking me to draw little card people for them too (my first “commission” was a Victorian family, followed by a football team). It then dawned on me that it might be something which worked not just for my weird and wonderful girls! It was when other parents started taking an interest that I decided actually to do something about it."
You work with your sister Esther. How did that come about and what is it like working with family?
"I showed the little card people to Esther over two years ago (I hadn’t before as I thought she might laugh, I am always teased for being very childish….) and she immediately saw their potential. It was quite exciting really, I don’t think either of us will forget that day. We sat at my kitchen table for hours getting more and more carried away. It took many, many more kitchen table meetings to get to where we are now. We called our thrice weekly get together “the colouring club” as a way of playing it all down just in case nothing came of it!
"Working with family has its upsides and downsides. Our skills complement each other perfectly, which also means we are very different….so reconciling our opinions can be tricky…
"We are brutally honest with one another, in a way you could not be with other people…and being Spanish, we let it all out rather than holding it in…so it can be explosive. Our very English husbands and children know when to disappear from the scene!
"But we trust each other implicitly, and our passion for Carddies is augmented by our sisterly bond, I am sure of it. We are probably also able to reach decisions more quickly as we have a shared vision. We have had some great laughs in the past couple of years, many shared sister jokes which others would not get at all…"
You mention on your website that your children and Esther's are all involved in areas such as branding, packaging and future designs. How does this work? Do you produce ideas and present them to the kids for their opinion, do they come to you with ideas, or is it a mixture of the two?
"The children are most definitely involved in all these areas, and they have strong opinions. The interaction is two-way, and very live. All of the sets are based on our collective imagination…for example the girls in the past asked me to draw lots of extended families, so those were the first sets I drew. Where it is an “adult” idea (for instance Esther was very keen for a Knights set, as she has two boys), we run it past the children before we put pencil to paper.
"Also, when the artwork is in production, the children continually give us feedback in terms of what will work and what will not. They don’t hold back on their opinions…
"Coming up with the name was a collective (and at times extremely silly!) process…. it took months. As chance would have it we have an initial of each member of our two families in there."
So with the help of your kids you've produced a product that other kids love too. I'm sure you've had lots of feedback from both mums and their children on the Carddies sets. But have you had any truly memorable feedback, anything that has truly stuck with you?
"You are right, we have had some wonderful feedback, and we have loved that. The feedback from families with children with SEN has been the most moving. It is nice to know that the Carddies have made a connection with the child-which in turn makes the parent happy (for example: “I was taken aback by C’s voluntary 'unopposed' concentration span, breadth of vocabulary, enjoyment of the box design, its organisation within and most of all his instant understanding of the theme.”).
"The comments that make us laugh the most are the gender stereotypical ones-such as the boy who never took the ladies in his Knights set out of the box at all:
"…my son thoroughly enjoyed creating a tale of knights and dragons… (I later found the two princesses still in the box and he told me they had been captured!)." Times Online.
"Or more recently, the girls who pulled out all the boys from their Carddies sets and very generously gave them to their Mummy to colour in and keep…
"We love it when children come up with their own ideas as to what sets they would like us to do next (see for example all the suggestions from the little Zoe and Drew testers).
"We have had lots of wonderful suggestions, some of which coincide with sets we already have in the pipeline (20 more sets are all drawn up) and some a bit more specialist (eg wrestlers!)."
Other than your kids, what else inspires the designs?
"My very childish imagination is the principal inspiration. As a child I always loved making animals and people out of all sorts of things…and having children is an excuse to do revert to what I enjoy most.
"My style of drawing has not changed much over the years, and I think that is one of the reasons the Carddies appeal, they are very innocent and childlike in design. Interestingly Esther has drawn most of the scenes and some of packaging artwork, and it is difficult to distinguish the two styles…shared childhood, I guess!
"As regards inspiration for themes, we are never sort of those. In fact we have so many drawn up or in the pipeline that it is quite overwhelming."

The Review
The Carddies team were kind enough to send us three sets of their new "Sports" box. We kept one to review ourselves and sent out the further two sets to Kate, mum to Sophie (4) and Sarah, mum to Lena (3). Here's what we all thought:
Kate and Sophie
"The Carddies are "great " - Sophie's quote. She has throughly enjoyed colouring the characters. She was really creative with the patterns on the sports wear, a budding designer. It kept her busy for ages, which was great for me.... I could feed Emily while chatting about the sports people. I will definitely buy a set for a friend's little girl - probably the fairies one. The only thing that Soph struggled with was colouring the backs as she wanted them to match [the fronts] but couldn't remember [what she'd done on] the front. This was therefore left to me."
Sarah and Lena
"We got on really well with them, [we] had to have 2 attempts as the first time we tried [Lena's baby sister] was still awake and tried sooooo many times to get the pieces [...] So second time we had a go when [she] was napping and Lena loved them. We coloured the people first off, which I wasn't allowed to do 'cos they're 'for "little girls" not mummies', although mummy did sneak one away while she wasn't looking and she got quite cross with me! At first glance I thought they'd be a bit [hard] to colour as the card looked like that shiny one that's rubbish to colour on with crayons but they're fantastic! Lena particularly liked giving them names, (she's named them all after her preschool friends and cousins!) We did them on Tuesday and she's played with them everyday so far, she's got them in her bedroom and plays with them on the window sill, even when she's supposed to be in bed asleep!!!"

There is a wonderful section where each person is drawn again so that their names can be written down so mummy can remember who is who!
Amanda, Tim and Oscar
"Oscar is rather too small to enjoy the Carddies just yet. But I (Amanda) had a fantastic time colouring in all the little people. Tim thought it was amusing just how much I enjoyed it. I think my words were, "why do we ever stop colouring in? They should make colouring books for adults!" But the Carddies box does say, "3-99 years"!! so I think I'm okay!
"I love the fact that everything fits neatly into the little box so nothing ever gets lost. I also think it is a fantastic touch the on the back of the scene each of the little people have been drawn with a line underneath them so that you can write each character's name down. It means even if mummy forgets any of the names she has a reminder!
"Oscar is going to love them when he gets older, I'm sure. We'll definitely be buying him some sets, especially the fantasy ones like the Knight's set. In fact I may have to buy daddy his own set of Knights otherwise there might be arguments!
"This current set, Sports, is ideally suited for discussing the Olypmics with older children in a fun way. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone with children, and even some adults I know."

Can you tell how much I'm enjoying colouring all the tiny details in?
